Grace Bonebrake was my great-grandmother. She is my brick wall, as I don’t have enough information about her or her parents. She was born Grace Fox in Vian, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) in approximately 1888. She married John Samuel Hunter at the age of 14, who was later registered in the Cherokee Rolls.
I have started writing my account of finding grace and the journey and connections I hope to make along the way. Stay tuned for updates and posts about that journey.
This postcard is where I will start. I plan to obtain the original from my mother to see the message and gather more information about Flossie Cox. The connection to the Cox family that I know so far is that her Sister or her Aunt on her mother’s side was Ellen Margaret Andrews. She married Arch Cox, and I believe this letter to Flossie is addressed to a relative on that side of the family. I know she was close with Ellen, Arch, and their daughter Lillie. I have many photos of them together, and on the census, Grace is even listed as Grace Cox, not Fox. I believe, and have DNA evidence to support, that George Washington Fox Jr. was her father. The only problem with this is that he is shown as being married to someone else. I have a photo labeled ‘Great Grandma Andrews,’ and I believe it is her mother in the 1884 photo. This is a summary of a lot of information, and I will detail my evidence and opinions on it in future posts. Although Grace was married to Sylvester Bonebrake, she is categorized under Bonebrake in my records. She and Sylvester had one daughter, Norma Bonebrake (my grandmother).
I look at this postcard and wonder about her life in 1915. She appears very strong in this photo, and I feel a strong connection to her. This search will help answer some questions about her life and allow me to connect with her further.
